gold certificate -- just for fun -- how much should I pay?

I would like a US gold certificate, a yellowback...how much should I pay for a $10 one? Is this a good investment?

Thanks for any opinions...

I can't answer your question but too think they're neat. What I found out was that a authentic note in good condition costs an arm and a leg because they are collected.

I copied and printed a good color picture of a pay to bearer on demand note and a Silver Certificate. They work fine to look at and serve as reminders about the fraud of FRNs

Hey, Jelly:

I don't buy paper for collectibility. In my opinion, anything more than a small premium over face value is too much. It's paper, after all.

I will say I have downloaded some great pics of various gold and silver certificates, as well as other other types of paper money.

For me it's not worth the FRNs to buy obsolete paper.

If you enjoy it, go for it. I would use eBay as a good price guide as what would be a fair price for any certificate you are looking for.

Last week I bought some silver at my local coin dealer. I paid cash and the change was $2. He only had one FRN, so he gave me that and a $1 silver certificate. My first thought was that's about what its worth. My second thought was I just got a dollar bill that I can't spend. I told him I would rather have four silver quarters. We both got a laugh out of that.
